Network Projects

GÉANT manages research and education networking projects in partnership with the European Commission (EC), our European NREN members, global NRENs and other partners.

At the core of these projects is to interconnect national research and education networking (NREN) organisations in different regions, through the procurement, building and operation of large-scale, advanced international high-speed networks. Some of the projects also include development and delivery of services above the network, and research into networking technologies.

GÉANT Project GN4-3

The GÉANT Project operates the pan-European GÉANT network, delivering advanced multi-domain services and facilitates joint-research activity that drives innovation. AfricaConnect3 supports the development of high-capacity internet networks for research and education across Africa. It builds on existing networks in Eastern and Southern Africa and North Africa and will extend connectivity into West and Central Africa. With links to the GÉANT network AfricaConnect3 will provide an African gateway for global collaborations.

The BELLA Programme provides for the long-term interconnectivity needs of European and Latin American research and education communities. This is being achieved through two complementary and interdependent actions which will significantly enhance the ability of researchers and academics across to two regions to collaborate together. Launched in 2010, CAREN interconnects researchers, academics and students at over 500 institutions in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan also candidate countries.
EU funding for the CAREN project ended in December 2019. The region’s NRENs have started a new phase of regional collaboration.

EUMEDCONNECT3 sets out to create a high-capacity dedicated internet network for the research and education communities across the eastern Mediterranean region, enabling scientists and academics to collaborate and engage in innovative, data-intensive international projects.
With direct links to the pan-European GÉANT network, EUMEDCONNECT3 provides access to over 50 million users at over 10,000 research and education establishments across Europe.

GLIF, the Global Lambda Integrated Facility, is an international consortium that promotes the paradigm of lambda networking. GLIF gathers lambda providers and GOLE (GLIF Open Lightpath Exchange) operators internationally as an integrated facility to support data-intensive scientific research, and supports network middleware development for global automated lambda networking.
GÉANT provides secretariat support for GLIF and participates in the Network Service Interface deployment and standardisation activities.

The EU-funded ‘EU4Digital: Connecting Research and Education Communities (EaPConnect)’ project is creating a regional high-speed Internet network dedicated to research and education across Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
