EuroHPC HyperConnectivity

A federated High-Performance Computing (HPC) Europe can only exist if it is hyperconnected, and hyperconnectivity can only exist if we build it together, on foundations we already trust.

Hyperconnecting European HPC sites

GÉANT has been awarded a contract by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU) to deliver high-capacity, secure, pan-European connectivity for Europe’s supercomputing infrastructure. In partnership with European NRENs, GÉANT is taking a transformative step that strengthens Europe’s digital sovereignty while ensuring that the benefits of HPC are accessible to the community.

The EuroHPC HyperConnectivity project is the result of an open call for tenders (EUROHPC/2024/OP/0008) launched by the EuroHPC JU in December 2024. The contract, valued at up to 60 million euro, covers the design, implementation, and operation of the hyperconnectivity infrastructure over a period of 48 months.

The project builds upon the reliable and secure GÉANT network infrastructure that has served European science for decades to create a hyperconnected infrastructure with transmission capabilities in the terabits-per-second range.

This infrastructure expands upon the established multi-country ecosystem and leverages the reach and expertise of European NRENs, and will greatly enhance data exchange between EuroHPC supercomputers, national supercomputers, AI Factories, quantum facilities, as well as research and data centres across Europe.

Project impact

  • Ensure seamless, high-performance access to world-class HPC and cloud resources via a federated operating model, connecting European, national and regional supercomputing centres into a unified structure. Hyperconnectivity transforms isolated HPC centres into a seamless European collaborative ecosystem.
  • Execute reliable, secure and predictable performance thanks to a Europe-wide efficient and advanced monitoring framework. Optimised data sharing and transparency lead to enhanced visibility and performance support and more strategic and data-driven investment decisions.
  • Deliver research sovereignty and enhanced interconnection to global research networks and low-latency interconnection via Europe’s Internet Exchange Points. Every centre and every country will be interconnected at equal excellence through the NRENs and GÉANT.

In short

This new connectivity service, provided by GÉANT and European NRENs, will give research communities, the public sector, industry and other innovation stakeholders direct, high-performance access to world-class EuroHPC resources.

A federated HPC Europe can only exist if it is hyperconnected, and hyperconnectivity can only exist if we built it together, on foundations we already trust.
