Hyperconnecting European HPC sites
GÉANT has been awarded a contract by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU) to deliver high-capacity, secure, pan-European connectivity for Europe’s supercomputing infrastructure. In partnership with European NRENs, GÉANT is taking a transformative step that strengthens Europe’s digital sovereignty while ensuring that the benefits of HPC are accessible to the community.
The EuroHPC HyperConnectivity project is the result of an open call for tenders (EUROHPC/2024/OP/0008) launched by the EuroHPC JU in December 2024. The contract, valued at up to 60 million euro, covers the design, implementation, and operation of the hyperconnectivity infrastructure over a period of 48 months.
The project builds upon the reliable and secure GÉANT network infrastructure that has served European science for decades to create a hyperconnected infrastructure with transmission capabilities in the terabits-per-second range.
This infrastructure expands upon the established multi-country ecosystem and leverages the reach and expertise of European NRENs, and will greatly enhance data exchange between EuroHPC supercomputers, national supercomputers, AI Factories, quantum facilities, as well as research and data centres across Europe.
